You've probably heard about it by now. Chik-Fil-A's Dan Cathy came out in support of traditional marrage. The Gay Marriage folk were up in arms about that. There was a "Support Chik-Fil-A" day on the first of August, and by all reports their sales were incredible systemwide.
There was a Pro-Gay/Anti-Chik-Fil-A protest today, a 'Kiss-In'. Supposedly a whole lot of people were going to one here in Georgia - several thousand according to a Facebook page set up for it.
Apparently about 30 showed. And... nobody really cared. Out in Hollywood, CA apparently the management at one had to ask media crews to leave, though, because they were constantly trying to get sound bites from the employees.
I'm just laughing about it all.
Look, folks - support for traditional marriage is just that. Support for that doesn't mean you can't support gay marriage also, any more than liking beef means you have to hate chicken, or liking bean sprouts and vegan food means you hate hot dogs. It isn't a binary solution set - where if you accept X you've got to reject Y. Put both on the plate - see what happens. We've got a BIG plate here - and there's room for everything.
So Dan Cathy said he backed "the biblical definition of a family" and later said: ""I think we are inviting God's judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say, `We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage.'"
So what? I'm supposed to stop eating at Chik-Fil-A? (They've got good food, but I think it's a bit pricey.)
The US is a BIG country, with over 300 million people. Are we to understand that there's NO room for personal opinions?
Personally, I don't care much at all about gay marriage. Put me down as 'indifferent, because it doesn't matter to me.' Want to get married? Invite me to the wedding, just don't expect me to kiss any guys.
But apparently by feeling so, I'm a 'hater' and bigot as far as the gay-marriage community is concerned. You can't just 'not care' about this issue, apparently - that puts you on the 'hater' side of the scale.
But indifference isn't hate! Indifference simply means that you don't care, not that you hate. Do I support traditional marriage? Sure - it seems to work. (and I LIKE the way it's worked for me.)
Do I support gay marriage? Sure - why not? Knock yourselves out - do it legally, and don't forget the gay divorce when it ends, 'k?
But this guy - HE had to make a statement...
He made one, all right. He got himself fired (for being obnoxious, apparently) and you've got to wonder if this wasn't a 'last straw' thing with his management. If he'll go out of his way to be rude to someone who had no connection with corporate policy, and GLOAT about his planning on the video he posted on youtube... you've got to wonder how he treated the folks around and under him at his place of work.
I don't think this was a one-off event by any means.
But now he's looking for another job - it'll be interesting explaining about why he got fired from his previous one.
