I can understand a desire for either a secular government or one of strict Islamic theocracy. I can understand the desire to take out (non-fatally) someone who would seem to be in the way of those desires. Heck, our political system is based on such things any more - or so it seems.Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto has been shot dead at a political rally.
The gunman then detonated a bomb, killing at least 15 of her supporters. Many more were injured in the suicide blast.
But I cannot understand why someone would see assassinating a popular figure as something good, something likely to bring to fruition what they desire for the future.
Don't they see what such stupidity has gotten the Palestinians? Or do they think that THIS time it'll get them what they want?
Benazir Bhutto is dead. Pakistan is in turmoil. What will the body count be? And how could the hardline Islamist factions think this would HELP them?

In a word: no.
Pakistan has featured quite a few things the Palestinians never tried: like defining Islam to not include individuals who consider themselves Islamic, having one of the first instances of Sharia law before Afghanistan did, trying to fight a battle at Mountain Warfare altitudes without Mountain Warfare troops, staging 2.5 wars to contest a province that has demonstrated it wants to go to two countries, having an ethnic population that does not consider itself Pakistani, having neighbor willing to outwait a 100 year deadline about its border, has another group of folks who consider themselves cheated out of autonomy... the Palestinians are simple simpletons compared to the complexities invented in Pakistan.
These folks have grudges going back before the Phoenicians even *got* to the place where Palestinians are today. Best we remember that Iraq was about 500x more complicated than any of our diplomats made it out to be. Pakistan is worse.
Plus it has nuclear devices!
Make your political decisions wisely, for a glib tongue that is ill thought out or 'new way' that is an old way dressed up in better clothes will come back to haunt us.
