'USAF struck Syrian nuclear site' | Jerusalem PostKnowing the prohibitions on the use of nukes, I have a hard time believing that Al Jazeera's got this one right. Having looked at the pictures, I'm sure of it.The September 6 raid over Syria was carried out by the US Air Force, the Al-Jazeera Web site reported Friday. The Web site quoted Israeli and Arab sources as saying that two US jets armed with tactical nuclear weapons carried out an attack on a suspected nuclear site under construction.
The sources were quoted as saying that Israeli F-15 and F-16 jets provided cover for the US planes.
The sources added that each US plane carried one tactical nuclear weapon and that the site was hit by one bomb and was totally destroyed.
Nukes are terribly destructive. (Okay, that's an understatement.) They aren't used in situations where other conventional weapons (Like MOABs) would suffice.
But it does go to show one thing - there's people out there who will believe anything they see in print, and the wilder the story the more likey it is they'll believe it.

Someone commented that the story might be floated to explain traces of nuclear material at the site....
When I read the story the first time, I missed the "nuclear" bomb mention - thought it was just including the US as a part of the attack. When I realized the "nuclear" part, I think the idea that they're using it to cover traceable nuclear material is probably a good guess.

Suek - You've got to pretty much guess at what was going on there. The quick burial of evidence makes me think it was nuclear also. I'm quite sure, from the lack of a crater and other destruction, that no nuke went off there.
