Edwards backs mandatory preventive care - Yahoo! News

TIPTON, Iowa - Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards said on Sunday that his universal health care proposal would require that Americans go to the doctor for preventive care.

"It requires that everybody be covered. It requires that everybody get preventive care," he told a crowd sitting in lawn chairs in front of the Cedar County Courthouse. "If you are going to be in the system, you can't choose not to go to the doctor for 20 years. You have to go in and be checked and make sure that you are OK."

And he thinks he can make it all happen for only about $120 bil a year. Let's see - 120 bil divided by 300 mil - That's $400 per person per year.
Edwards said his mandatory health care plan would cover preventive, chronic and long-term health care. The plan would include mental health care as well as dental and vision coverage for all Americans.

"The whole idea is a continuum of care, basically from birth to death," he said.

Cradle to grave coverage. Ain't that nice? It won't be cheap, however - I figure it'll be between 3 and 4 times that for a minimal level of coverage for all. (Based on the idea that it seems any government program seems to end up costing 3 to 4 times as much as proposed to get any results at all.)

But we can end Bush's tax cuts. That'll pay for it! Soak the rich, and watch unemployment rise - so people will NEED their free health care!

Go back to your SUVs, Senator. We've had this proposed before, and the numbers didn't work then either. What did you do, dig into the archives and dust off HillaryCare?

Man, I just love the Dem's sense of humor. All we've got to do is put THEM in complete control of our lives, abdicate all choice, drive what they want us to drive, eat what they tell us, go to the doctors they tell us, and everyone will be happy and healthy and everything will be beautiful and clean and all will be equal.

Just remember, though, that next time Al Gore jets off to recommend to a crowd of synchophants that they dump their cars and ride bicycles that SOME animals are more equal than OTHERS...

Or what? They'll throw you in jail? They won't cover you? If the latter, then you're still going to have people uncovered by insurance, aren't you!

I had a mastectomy nearly 20 years ago. Had all my meds for a couple of years and got annoyed at the doctor who was the only one in our area covered by whatever insurance we had. Stopped going to the doctor, and haven't been back. Now...my prosthetic bras (about $40 each)and "falsie"(which costs about $350) are supposed to be covered by my insurance. But in order to get them covered, I have to have a prescription. They don't keep a permanent prescription on record, I'm supposed to get a new one each year. So...I called the doctor and requested a prescription for prosthetic "stuff". Sorry...the receptionist said. You're not a regular patient. Why not? Because in order to be a "regular" patient" I have to have a physical each year. If I haven't had a physical in over a year, I'm no longer a "regular" patient. Physicals cost in the neighborhood of $150 plus. Of course, the insurance will pay for it. So...in order to get about $160 worth of bras each year, plus a new prosthetic (falsie) at about $350 every three years or so, I also have to bill the health insurance company an additional $150 - plus whatever lab work he wants - usually about the same. Oh yeah. This _really_ makes sense.

Reminds me of the old salesman joke, "I don't care if we're losing money on each transaction, we'll make it back on volume!"

Suek -

The devil, as they say, is in the details. You know what stuff costs. You also know that $400 per person ain't gonna cover it. So that leaves two possibilities open -

1. Rationed care.

2. Higher 'premiums'.

And I think it'll be both in the end.

Beware when government wants to GIVE you something. Because they ultimately get the money for whatever they want to give you FROM you in the first place.

Ah, yes, the good old days...
