The UN works so well...

... that it only makes sense to scale it up (or down) to having a consortium of governments run the Internet.

Yeah, I get a cringy feeling abut it too. But apparently the EU (which is also a model of international and economic cooperation) doesn't like seeing the US have control. So let's get everyone's hand in, and it'll all run better.

Right?

Man, I get a really bad feeling about this. But on the good side - they'll probably not screw it up too badly. I mean, really, when they can't even manage to decide on a constitution they're going to have a hell of a time figuring out how to control the Internet. At least... so I hope.

As much as you'd like to compare the EU to the UN, it's not that similar. To be honest, the EU is closer to early US than it is to the UN in form and structure... minus the cohesion that comes from fighting a revolution together of course.

Does that make them qualified to run the internet? Well... not really, but I guess they could if they tried hard enough ;) I wouldn't want the early US to run the internet either... but I just thought I'd point out the EU is probably much more suited than the UN.

Also, the E.U. does not have members such as Syria and Cuba. They actually have a few members that think well of the U.S.

So, we take control from the US - which has no problems with allowing pretty much anything up on-line (and doesn't much worry about the rest of the world, either - otherwise there'd be a shitload of sites that wouldn't exist) and put it in the hands of a bunch of folks who will have their own agendas, opinions, and definitions on what constitutes acceptable content, and who will have the power to enforce their decisions on the rest of the world - none of which agendas or opinions are transparent except THEY don't want the US in control.

(Makes me wonder if they're not going "Well, if WE had sole control, this is what WE would be doing, so we've got to stop the US before THEY do what WE would do in the same situation." And then they're setting themselves up to be in the situation where they'll be able to do what they want.)

Sorry, but I don't see them 'having a few members that think well of the US' as overcoming the drawbacks. This smells like a disaster in the making.

I agree that it looks like an oncoming disaster, but better that than an oncoming catastrophe, which it would be if the U.N. was the one taking over. I think the whole thing is a solution in search of a problem, but apparently there are a lot of people out there who think differently (and who get paid big bux to come up with said problems). Knowing Americans as I do, though, I expect that in the long run it won't matter; we'll figure out ways around anything the 'crats will come up with, and whatever the E.U. comes up with will probably be easier to deal with than what the U.N. would.
