From the various articles about this I have seen today, some speculation is that the python had not ensured that the alligator was completely dead when it swallowed it. The alligator apparently recovered enough to try to claw its way out with its hind claws, which was fatal to the python, but did not get it access to air, which was fatal to the alligator. I believe this is referred to in the SCA as a "double kill". The alligator's jaws were of no use to it in this because the jaws have strong muscles for closing the jaw, but weak ones for opening it (which is what makes alligator wrestling possible).

Goes to show, you should always make sure your food's dead (or at least sufficiently stunned) before you swallow it...
